Inclusion Matters: A Holocaust Survivor’s Story

  • Manhattan Beach Middle School Auditorium  1501 North Redondo Avenue Manhattan Beach, CA, 90266 United States (map)

The November Families Connected Speaker Series event, “Inclusion Matters: A Holocaust Survivor’s Story,” is presented by the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation, South Bay Families Connected and Beach Cities Health District, in partnership with Manhattan Beach Unified School District, Hermosa Beach City School District and Redondo Beach Unified School District. Rita Lurie was a five year old living in Poland when she and 14 other members of her family went into hiding from the Nazis. What they thought would be a week or two in an attic turned into almost two years. Rita will share her life before, during and after the Holocaust. She and her daughter will explore the legacies of the Holocaust for future generations, including children of Holocaust survivors, also known as second-generation survivors. Rita’s daughter, Leslie Gilbert-Lurie, will share the impact of history on her own identity and perspectives, and on her daughter Mikaela that she explores in the memoir she co-wrote with her mother, "Bending Toward the Sun.” The event is free, but registration is required. Register here
