Quitting the Vape: How I Did It

If you want to quit vaping but you cannot do it alone, then read on! I was addicted to nicotine for years. I sacrificed feeling mentally healthy in order to get a little head rush every once in a while. At one point, I got so used to vaping that I couldn’t even get buzzed. It made me moody, my appetite decreased significantly, and I was always scared that I would be caught. I could never fully relax, and I wanted to quit but I didn’t know how. At one point I realized that I couldn't live being addicted to something as stupid as a vape. It took some time, but eventually I was able to quit nicotine and finally feel like myself again. I want to share some tips from my experience and what helped me in the process of quitting vaping.

  1. YOU have to want to stop. Anyone can take a vape away from you, but you will always be able to go out and get another one. The only way to stop nicotine is if you are quitting for yourself, and believing that it is possible for you to stop.

  2. Nicotine gum is an option. It made me miss my vape even more because it didn’t give me a head rush nor satisfy me. It made me feel nauseous and sometimes it would give me a headache. I have also heard how it has helped people to not feel cravings, and everybody responds differently so it is worth a shot to try it.

  3. Nicotine patches were AMAZING. It didn’t feel like anything, but I had significantly less cravings. I also thought about vaping much less, and I felt healthier throughout my day. I recommend to use the full nicotine patch for a week, then move to half a patch for the second week. After two weeks you should be good enough to stop using the patches.

  4. Relapsing is very normal and it is not the end of the world. You just need to get back up and restart. Do not get too upset yourself, and instead focus your energy into quitting.

  5. The environment you are in will contribute to how easy it is to stop. If you are around people using a vape, it is only going to make you want to use nicotine even more. You have to separate yourself from those people, and find friends that make you happy when you are sober.

  6. The only way to quit nicotine is by stopping vaping, period. I do not, however, recommend stopping cold turkey. Most likely you will be moody, have cravings constantly, and you may even have withdrawals. Using nicotine gum or patches will reduce the severity of this, and I fully recommend it.

Even though it feels impossible, being free from nicotine is the best thing you can do for yourself. It’s a really bad habit and it is hard to stop, but it’s completely worth it. You can do it!
